Insurance adjuster falls down elevator shaft in Fort Lauderdale

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

FORT LAUDERDALE — A car insurance adjuster was rushed to the hospital with fractured bones after falling down a condo elevator shaft during a meeting with a client, authorities said.

The accident happened Tuesday afternoon, moments after the insurance adjuster walked out of an elevator at Las Olas by the River condominium with a client who lived there, said Bob Rathmanner, who manages the building at 520 SE Fifth Ave.

The leash of the client’s dog got stuck in the elevator when the doors closed behind them, Rathmanner said. The insurance adjuster, whose name has not been released, tried to help his client free the animal.

When they pried open the doors, the insurance adjuster fell into the shaft, falling three stories to the bottom of the shaft, authorities said.

The building manager said the man could be heard at the bottom calling for help.

“He was conscious. I think he’s going to be OK,” Rathmanner said.

The man was taken to Broward General Medical Center with serious injuries, FortLauderdale Fire-Rescue spokesman Matt Little said.

FLORIDA UNIFORM ELEVATOR KEY LAW GOES INTO EFFECT

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

A law requiring a uniform fire key for elevators in new or renovated buildings with six or more floors went into effect in Florida on October 1. According to PRWeb®, “under the Uniform Fire Key standard, Chapter 399 Florida Statutes requires one single key to operate all of the fire service key switches in the elevator lobby panels and car panels. Master elevator keys may be issued only to the fire department and the key may not be duplicated.” Affected buildings include those for which a building permit was issued after September 30, 2006, or for those which have undergone “substantial improvement.”

South Florida: Baby couldn’t wait to arrive

Friday, October 17th, 2008

October 12, 2008

Coral Springs firefighters made a special delivery inside an elevator at Coral Springs Medical Center on Saturday afternoon.

A pregnant woman’s water broke as she shopped for shoes at the Coral Square Mall about 2 p.m. Four of the firefighters rushed the woman into the hospital and then into an elevator, headed for the delivery unit on the second floor.

But as soon as the doors shut, the baby started coming out. By the time the elevator reached the second floor and the doors opened, the baby was almost fully out, and the firefighters finished the delivery in the hospital hallway, said Mike Matonak, one of the firefighters.

Mother and the girl were doing fine.
